A possible alternative to canopy masking…I always have trouble masking canopies and it takes some of the fun out of building. I wondered what would happen if I used striping tape to define the framing. I bought some 1/8 auto striping tape in silver. I stuck some of the tape onto a sheet of glass, then painted it the final color of the canopy framing. Then with a straightedge I cut thin strips the proper width and carefully applied them to a canopy which I had previously applied Future to. It was a bit fiddly getting them aligned, but a lot easier than masking. I discovered that I could stretch the tape to make curved and circular framing as well. Since the base tape color was silver, the interior looked like aluminum…good enough. I did not find any zinc chromate striping tape, but that would be perfect. After the tape was applied and burnished down, I gave the canopy another coat of Future. The end result was a very durable framed canopy with less work than masking. This tape sticks to cars through thick and thin. Here are two photos of the results on a 1:48 Stuka canopy. I plan to do this again, it worked so well for me.Tommy Meisel’s photo.Tommy Meisel’s photo.
