To answer your question, the Bhutanese Nepali people have been displaced since the early 1990’s. Bhutanese refugees are descendents of Nepali migrants who came to Bhutan in the late 1890’s. They were granted Bhutanese citizenship, but maintained many Nepali traditions, including dress and language. In the 1980’s, the Bhutanese king was afraid this minority was becoming too strong, so he imposed the “One Bhutan, One People” policy. The Bhutanese-Nepali people were stripped of their citizenship, forced to wear traditional Bhutanese garb, and were no longer allowed to speak Nepali. After demonstrations, the government cracked down. There are widespread reports of arrests, torture, and rape during this time. The Bhutanese government began making Bhutanese-Nepali people sign “voluntary migration” forms. In the early 1990’s, thousands of people began fleeing Bhutan and when the UNHCR created the first camp in Nepal, there were more than 105,000 refugees. In 2007, resettlement became an option for these refugees, and they began coming to the United States. The resettlement process to the United States is a long one. Resettlement to a third country is always the last option for refugees. In general, refugees are resettled to certain cities based on the city’s economic opportunity. Likewise, it is common to try to keep communities together. In terms of helping the family, talking to the daughter is the first step. If you need additional help, please reach out to our Bhutanese-Nepali caseworker, Jhuma Acharya. His email is jacharya@cris-ohio.org. Depending on when they arrived to the United States, they may be receiving assistance from a resettlement agency already there are three in Columbus. It is possible that they are clients of one of these agencies.Regardless, it is also important to have allies in the community who are willing to help these new Americans! Having supportive community members is invaluable to the integration process. Thank you.

Markus Ananda Oskari No doubt it’s about the April 2015 mag 8 quake aftermath. Scores of people dead, villages flattened and economies destroyed. (Estimates at losses from the quake hover around 35% of the country’s GDP.) Good overview on wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_2015_Nepal_earthquake … and for a more hands-on on the ground sense, check out Funky Buddha Hands, a project by some friends who have been helping out in the crisis. Many blessings to you for helping out in times of need. The people(s) of Nepalis are beautiful, I remember my time in there with a fond heart.

Brian Feather I had and inkling this was why some new faces, however there have been at least 15-20 families that have been here for a good 2-3 years already, all the dwellings are within a couple mile radius. my new friend Birkha has been here 8 months. I gotta help these guys, they have never used a telephone and they are in the lions den here in America only 1 teenage daughter can speak some English and i speak with Birkha in a slimy mix of Hindi, Gujarati and English all in the soup so i recon ill ask permission to speak with her and set the tone for translation so i dont get anything wrong as im sure i can get them food and help turn the social service machines on. teach how to fix the house and i can line him up as a neighborhood manual helper.

on a different note- as far as food, he didnt even recognize some of the fruit but got more excited about the potatoes. I would presume that Indian staples in general would suffice, no? anything else that may be a semi delicacy for them that i could find at say, any of our Indian supermarkets or even at the temple?

i will check out the links thanks! thanks also for the warm comments,
